For any of you who don’t know, Patrick Star is the best friend of cartoon icon Spongebob Squarepants. Patrick is the bumbling buffoon who is constantly annoying the citizens of Bikini Bottom with his special brand of stupidity. Since I did a tutorial on how to draw Spongebob a while back, I thought it would be fitting to teach you how to draw his best friend, Patrick. Let’s get started!
What you’ll need:
Patrick Star is one of the easiest cartoon characters you will ever draw. His basic body shape is just as his name implies, a star. So to start with, we need to draw a large circle that will form his midsection.
After you have his midsection drawn, you can now draw the outline of Patrick’s head and arms. These are just going to be simple triangles. Patrick’s head sits directly in the middle of his body, and his arms touch either side of his head, with his arms being about 1/2 the size of his head.
Draw two small triangles on the bottom of the circle to make Patrick’s legs. Draw his legs about 1/2 the size of his arms.
Once you have the basic map of Patrick Star’s body drawn, you can now erase any overlapping lines, and clean up his outline a bit. Adding a little curve to Patrick’s arms and head will keep your drawing from looking too stiff.
At this point, we can now draw Patrick’s face. His face is very simple, and really only consists of three shapes. Two large, vertical ovals will make up his eyes. Since this pose is called a 3/4 view, draw Patrick’s eyes slightly to the left of his head to give the effect that he is standing at a diagonal.
Make Patrick’s mouth by drawing a triangle that looks similar to a boat’s sail laying on it’s side. Be sure to draw Patrick’s mouth exactly as wide as his eyes.
You can draw Patrick’s shorts by drawing a thin line across his belly. His shorts only come up about 1/3 the way up his midsection. Be sure to add cuffs about halfway down his legs, and Patrick finally has clothes!
By now you have essentially completed your drawing of Patrick Star. The only thing left to do is add a few details like his spots, eyebrows, a tongue, and some flowers on his shorts.
That’s all folks! You’ve drawn your very own Patrick Star. And don’t forget to email me YOUR completed Patrick that you drew using this tutorial and you could be featured on the front page!
